READ PSALM 124:8
Have you ever really stopped to think about everything that’s encompassed in the words “who made heaven and earth”? Our own solar system that lies within the Milky Way Galaxy is immense just by itself. But then consider that it’s only one of some estimated 2 trillion similar celestial bodies in the observable universe! The magnitude of our Lord’s power really begins to open up, doesn’t it?
Even without the Hubble telescope, I think David clearly understood this as he wrote Psalm 124, a psalm of praise to the Lord who had given Israel victory and kept the surrounding pagan nations from overtaking her.
Whenever that phrase “the name of the Lord” is used, like in verse 8, it is intentional. It is intended to invoke all the marvelous revelation of God’s mighty, redemptive power to help and to save His people—demonstrated over and over again throughout Israel’s history—all distilled into one name. The LORD. Yahweh. In Psalm 124, David is reminding the people of Israel that the Lord had always been there for them, even in the direst of circumstances.
The One who spoke into existence not only the observable portions of heaven and earth, but the portions of all reality beyond our sight and perception, is the One who is with you every day; just like He was for the nation of Israel. He came in human form to this tiny place within His colossal physical realm of creation to reestablish the relationship He enjoyed with Adam and Eve as He walked with them “in the cool of the day”. It looks very different, but it’s no less awesome.
Our help lies within the truth of who He is, who He always was, and who He always will be.
