Day 6: Genesis 1:20–23

Devotional

READ GENESIS 1:20–23

Living in the Colorado Mountains was an unforgettable experience. The quiet majesty of the peaks, the streams teeming with fish, and the birds soaring high above the valleys made me aware of the intricate beauty in God’s creation. Each creature, from the smallest insect to the great mountain elk, lived within the delicate balance of nature. This natural order reflects the beauty and purpose of God’s design, as seen in Genesis 1.

In Genesis 1:20-23, God is portrayed as the sovereign Creator, bringing life into the waters and the skies. On the fifth day, He commands the waters to “teem with swarms of living creatures” and for birds to “fly above the earth.” The Hebrew word “teem” (שָׁרַץ, sharats) signifies an abundance of life, highlighting God’s generosity in filling creation with variety and vitality. The passage underscores that God is not only powerful but purposeful—each creature was created “after its kind,” indicating intentionality and order. This diversity reveals a God who values both beauty and function, ensuring that every part of creation fits into the whole.

This text encourages us by demonstrating God’s pleasure in creation. He “saw that it was good,” showing His delight in the life He formed. The blessing to "be fruitful and multiply" reflects His desire for ongoing life and growth. This isn't just biological reproduction, but the flourishing of life in all its forms, underlining God's abundance in creation. As stewards of this world, we are called to recognize that same goodness in the natural world and in our lives, trusting that God's purposes are for life and blessing.

Just as God ordered creation to flourish, so He calls us to grow in spiritual fruitfulness. Whether through relationships, work, or personal growth, God invites us to participate in His ongoing creative work. Where is He calling you to multiply His goodness in your life?

Personal Reflection

  • How does recognizing God's intentionality in creation affect your understanding of His purpose for your life?
  • Where have you witnessed the beauty and abundance of God's creation in the natural world?
  • In what areas of your life can you reflect the fruitfulness God desires?

His beauty is all around us. The sunrise and the sunset. The gentle breeze and the gentleness of a steady rain. There is so much abundance (especially squirrels, roaches & wasps, lol), but our basic needs such as food, water, shelter are always met. We live in a land of abundance.

We drove across the country this summer. And everywhere we went I was amazed at the beauty God had created. The mountains, the hills, the beach and lakes all created by our God. What a blessing to experience it. God has been faithful in my life. All I have is from him and by him. I look at my life everyday and see the blessings he has bestowed on me and my family. All glory to God!!!

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. Matt.10.29-31

nGods creation points me to Him, reminding me how much he loves me and how valuable I am! When I know I am valued by my creator God, it helps me see value in those around me.

I had a college professor who would say “Creation is a theophany.” This series has brought that quote to mind often. ?
