Day 2: Genesis 1:3-5
Devotional
READ GENESIS 1:3-5
Have you ever paused to reflect on the power of light? Beyond simply illuminating the world, natural light plays a vital role in our well-being. It helps our bodies produce Vitamin D, regulates circadian rhythms, boosts productivity, and sustains the plants we rely on. Yet, in a world where artificial light is at our fingertips, it’s easy to take it for granted.
Light was so vital to ancient civilizations that many worshiped the sun as the source of life itself. Yet, the God of the Bible transcends light. He not only commands it; He is its Author. Before His powerful voice pierced the darkness, there was only void. But when God spoke, light emerged, and order began to replace chaos. He separated light from darkness, establishing day and night. This act of divine authority set the stage for life to flourish, since the light He spoke into existence was vital to it all.
You can’t help but read this and think of Jesus. John 1:4-5 says, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Jesus came to shatter the darkness of sin with His light. And just as the first days of creation were illuminated with a source other than the sun, Revelation says eternity won’t need a sun, because the light of Jesus will be enough (Revelation 21:23-25; 22:3).
As we long for the day when we will bask in the presence and light of Jesus Himself, we are reminded that He is the life and the light—our source of vitality, joy, meaning, and purpose. Life without Christ is like living in a world without light. Thank God for His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9).

Personal Reflection
How has Jesus brought order and light into your chaos and darkness? In what ways do you struggle to find your life in Him?
What other things are you tempted to find your life in? What reordering needs to happen to make Him your priority? How can you walk in His light today?

Jesus has brought peace and calmness in the midst of chaos in many situations in my life. Just saying and focusing on the name of Jesus brings me back to calm. I remind myself that he is in charge when things around me are chaotic. Sometimes walking in his light is as simple as saying his name out loud repeatedly and feeling his light come over you.
Love how light affects the physical body in so many ways. Thanks for the reminder that we need the spiritual light of Christ just as we need to physical light to flourish. I am thankful for the light of Christ in the midst of confusion and hardship. His light comforts and sustains. Thanks for the good word today Jamey!
