Summer in the Psalms: Psalm 8

“ For the choir director; on the Gittith. A Psalm of David. 1 O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth, Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens! 2 From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established strength Because of Your adversaries, To make the enemy and the revengeful cease. 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained; 4 What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him? 5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! 6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7 All sheep and oxen, And also the beasts of the field, 8 The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth![1]” (Psalm 8, NASB 95)—Psalm 8

Our Summer in the Psalms study takes us to the beautiful Psalm 8 this week. Our lesson began with the significance of a name and, more importantly, what it means. We bear many titles and roles like parent, child, employee, and citizen, but at our core, there is an essence of who we are. Just as God’s name (YAHWEH) means “I Am” and represents all He is, the Bible says we were made in His image, and our identity is profoundly linked to Him.

Begin by reading Psalm 8 aloud.

Discussion Questions

1. If you could choose any title to define you, what would it be?
2. How can you more intentionally bear God’s image through the unique role(s) He’s given you?
3. Who in your life needs to see Jesus in you? How can you bear His name more effectively?
4. What keeps you from finding your significance in the Lord?

Challenge: Memorize Psalm 1 this summer. At the end of each group meeting, ask each member to recite the portion they have learned!
