Meet Sarah Kier
In the Fall of 2017, my husband, Rhett, and I, along with the Campos, Courington, and Purtle families from Faith Bible, became part of a small group based on the topic of parenting tweens in our changing world. We began as acquaintances but became fast friends and confidants. The sense of shared struggles and wins became a huge source of community.
During a family Labor Day weekend camp at Pine Cove, the Purtles, Rhett, and I learned that Pine Cove would be changing their model of weekend camps by opening their facilities for churches or individual groups to reserve. We began to dream about the idea of doing a Faith Bible Church family camp. It was exciting to think of a weekend just like the one we were attending, only with our extended family in Christ.
We stepped out in faith that God would enable us to launch our vision. In those initial conversations, it was immediately obvious that He had gifted each of us with something that would be important in planning. We also realized that other people’s gifts and talents were needed. So, we looked to our friends from the small group. Becky Courington brought her spiritual gift of teaching and led the kid clubs at camp. With his extensive IT knowledge, Glenn Courington ran all of the media work. Kayla Campos brought her music talent and led worship. Jordan Campos gave us humor and fun that kept our planning sessions enjoyable and resulted in some hilarious camp skits. Through small group, God gave us the exact number of people with the precise skills we needed to pull off family camp. Isn’t He amazing?
In the end, we agreed that Labor Day Family Camp 2019 was one of the greatest joys and privileges God had given us to date. It was exciting and fun to let God work through us, realizing that we each were given very special roles in this project. God formed our small group community, and He blessed us immensely with the opportunity to serve and grow in our extended family of Christ. This Labor Day 2021, Faith Bible is hosting family camp at Carolina Creek, and we are so excited to see what God has in store.
