A Devo From Scot - Psalm 110

Dear Church,

When I pay attention to my heart - and that is not always the case in the midst of the busyness of the day - I find it longs, in increasing measure, for truth, stability and hope. A global pandemic, a controversial presidential election and seventeen other issues each with a dramatic spectrum of opinions and attitudes definitely plays a part in this heart longing. I want to encourage you right now - whatever you are doing - to stop for a moment and take a breath. In a tiny one-sentence prayer, ask God to reveal what you need most right now.

When I do that, most of what I see and hear from God is about Jesus, His eternal son. I just need more of Jesus. More of His compassion. Wisdom. Grace. Boldness. Sense of justice and injustice. Fearlessness. I need more of His presence and power. Maybe your deepest need is similar.

Today I want you to read Psalm 110. Said as simply as that, and with just seven verses, Psalm 110 is deceptive. It would take some familiarity bought over time to realize that there are few other Psalms, especially the Psalms of David, that are more important, more connected to the New Testament and more Jesus-centered than Psalm 110. Its seven verses make the biggest splash of all, rippling down through millennia and stretching even into the future. Best to read it and reread it multiple times. It’s that important.

The heart of what Psalm 110 reveals is beautifully simple: In Jesus, all of our deepest needs are met. He, Jesus, is the “Lord” in verse one. “The LORD (that is the Father) said to my Lord (that is the Son, Jesus).” It’s all about Jesus. He is King. He will eventually - and is even now - dismiss and dispatch all of His enemies. He is our priest, interceding for us to the Father. He is righteous Judge. He is Victor. He is the center of history, the future and all of eternity.

Dozens of texts through the gospels, Acts, Paul, Hebrews and Revelation bear out the impact and import of Psalm 110. Jesus is really what we need. And while that may sound like Christian blah, Jesus is currently meeting that need in hearts just like yours. Allow Him open access today.

I love you church.
