Preparing for Worship
As you prepare for Sunday, take some time this weekend to read through 1 John 3:11-17 a couple of times. You’ll notice how John returns to the topic of abiding in love, and how the one who truly abides in love, cannot also harbor hatred in his heart towards another. The apostle, in these verses, minces no words when it comes to the deadly nature of hatred: “he who does not love abides in death” (v. 14). Yikes! But notice, also, the example John gives in verse 16 of Christ’s selfless love through His sacrifice on the cross. It is this kind of love, sacrificial love, John reminds us that we are called to emulate.
As you reflect on this passage, consider these questions:
Both the Apostle John and our Savior, Jesus Christ, deal heavily with the problem of hatred in the heart. It brings only harm and destruction, but Christ came so that we may have life and have it in abundance (John 10:10). Consider this: am I enjoying the meaningful fellowship I am intended to enjoy as God’s child, or is there something keeping me from it?
We encourage you to meditate on these questions and let God’s Word deepen your faith and trust in Christ as you turn your eyes to look at Him. Also, don’t forget to check out our worship playlist on Spotify to help prepare your heart for Sunday!
We love you, church family, and we can’t wait to worship together this weekend. See you soon!
As you reflect on this passage, consider these questions:
- Considering this past week, how were you able to love and serve those around you? Take some time to thank the Lord for those sweet moments of sharing His love to others.
- Were there moments when you found yourself following the path towards hatred? Take some time to take those thoughts and feelings before the Lord, asking Him to shed His light and truth onto the situation. Perhaps this is a time to confess and ask for forgiveness.
