Day 45: Psalm 139:13-14

Devotional

READ PSALM 139:13-14

I’ll never forget the first time I felt those tiny baby flutters inside my stomach. Now, weeks later as I write this devotional, those little kicks keep coming, and the wonder of it still hasn’t faded. Psalm 139 has always been one of my favorite passages, but as a first-time mom-to-be, it has taken on a whole new depth of meaning.

In this Psalm, David praises God for His all-knowing, ever-present, all-powerful nature. It’s an intimate and heartfelt prayer in which David thanks God for creating him. And he does this using beautiful imagery that describes God as a master artisan. Like a potter skillfully shaping his masterpiece, God formed us. Like a weaver intricately knitting His design, God wove us together.

But David doesn’t just stop at the fact that God created us; he goes on to describe how He created us: “fearfully and wonderfully.” Here, the word “fearfully” (yārē’) doesn’t mean scared; it implies awe and astonishment, like watching a breathtaking sunrise. And “wonderfully” (pālâ) emphasizes that we are uniquely crafted, set apart for God’s purpose.

Let that sink in: God Himself carefully designed you in His image. You weren’t mass-produced like items in a factory; you are one of a kind. And because He made you, He knows you intimately (Psalm 139:1). Before you were even born, He knew your gifts, your personality, and all your days ahead.

There are times I think, “I wish I looked that way!” or “Why can’t I be more outgoing?” But feeling those little baby kicks reminds me just how precious each life is to our Father. Even on days when we don’t feel it, we are deeply loved and known by God. We can come to Him with all our messy thoughts and feelings, knowing He fully understands.
So today, rest in the truth that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, crafted by the hands of a loving Creator who knows you completely.

Personal Reflection

  • When you consider that God created you “fearfully and wonderfully,” how does this truth affect the way you see yourself and your unique qualities? How does it affect the way you see others?
  • How can you invite God into those areas of your life where you struggle to believe that you are deeply known and loved by Him?
  • How can you embrace your God-given purpose and individuality today?
