Day 36: Psalm 119:13-14

Devotional

READ PSALM 119:13-14

As a kid, I often heard, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” It’s one of the best quotes from the movie Bambi (even though I never actually liked the movie!). All that to say, our words have power. What we say matters and carries weight. I remember times when I prayed, telling God what He should do, as if I knew better than Him. Surely, I’m not the only one who's done that, right?

Psalm 119 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. It’s filled with incredible verses about knowing God’s Word and living by it.

The ESV Study Bible describes Psalm 119 this way: “This Psalm reflects the view that the LORD, who abounds in steadfast love and faithfulness, and who, therefore, freely and fully forgives his people when they confess their sins, loves his people without limit, and, therefore, also guides the faithful in the way of life that is generally good and beautiful.”

Psalm 119:13-14 leans into this idea of speaking, or declaring, God’s truth—and also rejoicing in it. There is joy, strength, and encouragement in reading God’s Word, but what if that’s all we do? What if we keep it all to ourselves? When we speak the truth of who God is and what He has done, it’s like uncovering a treasure more valuable than anything else. By declaring His testimonies, we invite His guidance into every situation and encourage those around us to seek Him. Remember, words have power.

Personal Reflection

  • Make a list of truths about who God is. Use this list to remind yourself that, regardless of our feelings, we can know who God truly is.
  • One of the greatest benefits of being in a small group or Life Group is having people with whom you can declare His truth. Are you part of a group where you can share His truth and testimony? If not, reach out and let us help get you connected.
  • This week, find someone to share the truth of who God is with. Speak life and encouragement into their life.

Let’s speak the truth to others and ourselves, for the truth will set us all free (John 8:32)!

Great challenge to find someone this week and speak God’s truth to them. Easy to keep to riches of God’s grace to ourselves. I need that constant challenge to share it.

There are so many people around us who are fearful. Speaking words of kindness; letting people know you see them and care speaks life and encouragement to them. And shows the love of Jesus. Thanks for the challenge!
