Day 5: Genesis 1:14-19

Devotional

READ GENESIS 1:14-19

Have you ever allowed yourself to be silenced by the vastness of the universe? Have you ever wrestled with the mind-blowing truth that the brilliant, creative, all-powerful Creator relishes in a personal relationship with you?

We start at the beginning of the fourth day. In three days, God created - heavens, earth, light, dark, evening, morning, expanses surrounded by water, waters, seas, dry land, vegetation, plants, and fruit. Next, God decided to introduce two great lights - the sun and the moon. These great lights would govern night, day, seasons, and time. This is miraculous! Introducing these great lights brought order, beauty, rest, life, and change to our daily experience.

Re-read the passage again. You may have missed the small phrase in verse 16 that is almost a footnote: “He made the stars also”. God created hundreds of billions of stars as a footnote. A FOOTNOTE! This observation first came to my attention during our time at Pine Cove family camp. One of the speakers referenced this verse during his teaching and highlighted that our Maker created the stars as a footnote! I personally have not been able to shake this idea, and it has been the context of my prayers as I have asked God for help over the past few months.

All of those galaxies of stars are… a footnote? Wow. Silence, reverence and awe continue to stir my soul. This is the God that wants to know me? This is the God that sent His son to die on a cross for me so that I could be forgiven? This is the God that invites me to talk with Him any time and all the time through prayer? This is the God who has promised to never leave or forsake me?

Our God created hundreds of billions of stars as a footnote. Let that truth set in. He is that big … and He loves you.

Personal Reflection

Have you ever seen a night sky of stars that stopped you in your tracks? Reflect on that experience. Allow the vastness of the universe to silence you in His presence.

If the creation of the stars is a footnote, our God is powerful enough to handle any challenge in our lives. Are you feeling overwhelmed with a challenge in your life that feels unfixable? Take that situation to God in prayer in its fullness. Ask Him for help and trust His will in response. No matter the outcome, our powerful Creator promises He will be with you and offers His peace.

Great perspective this morning. Thanks for highlighting the “footnote” about the stars. Great reminder that our God who put all this in motion, wants a personal relationship with us.

Does he expect us to explore the stars, and the universe? Or is it just there to make us think of how powerful he is?

Catching up….this is amazing! It makes me think about the Psalm that marvels at the God who created the universe would care for man. And now to think that the stars, such a massive part of the universe were a footnote! Man, our God is Awesome and incredible! Praise Him!
