Shattered Expectations
By Eric Wischmann, Junior High Guys Director
Hey Faith Bible! My name is Eric Wischmann and I am the Junior High Guys Director. Much like all of you, the last three months have not met my wife’s and my expectations in the slightest. On February 8th of this year I married my wife, Katelin. Then on February 9th, we moved down to The Woodlands, TX so that I could start at Faith Bible on February 11th. In a span of three days, we had gotten married, moved and started a new job in a new church. It was hard, but we expected it to be hard. However, we never would’ve expected that a month in, we would be in stay-at-home quarantine, in a 700 sq. foot apartment, in a city we barely knew.
Our expectations have been shattered. We expected to be able to connect with our church, to have dinners with families and to attend students’ baseball and soccer games. Instead our time has been spent at home and on zoom calls. In this season, we have felt out of control and lost at times. And, we know that we are not the only ones feeling like this.
Proverbs 3:5 and 6 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (ESV)
We found so much encouragement in the fact that God is in control and we are not. This season is not what we expected, but it has been so much better. We have grown in our marriage and relationship much faster than we ever could have anticipated. (I still have a long way to go.) There is not only encouragement, but also a challenge that comes with this verse. Trusting the Lord and not leaning on ourselves is an active discipline.
Naturally, as sinful humans, we want to be in control and have all the answers. Every day my prayer is that we would choose to lean on the Lord, trusting and knowing, that He is in control. It’s not easy, but there is so much peace in not trying to grasp control over every aspect of our lives. Ultimately, God is in control at all times, even when we feel the most out of control or lost. We have found so much encouragement in that fact, and we hope y’all will too.
We look forward to seeing you all soon.
